CAO

CAO was originally launched in 1993 by Cano Ozgener, who was the founder of CAO International Inc., a company that up until that point was known for its tobacco pipes. The General Cigar Co., inherited the entire portfolio of CAO’s preexisting brands after Swedish Match and ST Cigar Group Holdings merged in 2010, and the tobacco giant still distributes the brand and all its lines.

Most of my days at the office start with a pairing of the two, so it makes sense that manufacturers keep putting out these delicious coffee infused blends. And now PDR enters the game with three new blends based on their 1878 line that are infused with coffee flavors. Today we take a look at the PDR 1878 Dark Roast Café – an offshoot of the 90-rated PDR 1878 Capa Maduro. It comes draped in a dark and enticing Brazilian Maduro wrapper with a bold blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan Criollo leaves underneath. Many brands have put out coffee infused blends but what sets these apart is the use of real cane sugar in the infusion process which provides a nice touch sweetness to this medium-bodied blend.

It comes wrapped in an Ecuador Connecticut leaf, with a Dominican Criollo 98 binder and long fillers from Nicaragua and the Dominican underneath. It clocks in at a nice mellow to medium-bodied profile and is a great choice for a morning cigar paired with a cup of joe. It has a nice touch of sweetness, thanks to the use of real cane sugar in the infusion process, and very distinct yet subtle coffee flavors in every puff. Some coffee infused cigars are overdone and end up tasting more like a chocolate bar. But that’s not the case here. It’s mellow, creamy, smooth, and the flavors are never overpowering.

Distinct notes of cedar and oak come through, along with a leathery character. There's plenty of spice here, but it's complex and somewhat subtle with hints of allspice, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
